Arthur was the son of William M. Harman and Nancy Dillard. He married Jane I. Fincher, a daughter of Issac Fincher and Elizabeth Brooks, in 1857.
In 1861 he enlisted as a private in Co. A, 10th GA Battalion and fought at the Wilderness, Petersburg, Davis Farm, among others. After the battle as Suffolk he was transferred to Gen. Wright's brigade and remained with them until the surrender.
In 1892 he moved his family to Carrollton where he engaged in farming and invested in milling and cotton ginning.
Arthur and Jane had eight children: William, Arthur, John, Betsy, James, Luther, Edgar and Anna. They were of the Baptist faith.
