Leo Yost (1908 - 1985)

Leo Yost died Friday, June 21, 1985 at the age of 67 years, 8 months, ?days after suffering a heart attack while driving his pickup just east of Mayme McCormick and the late Pat McCormick farm.

He was born October 12, 1908 on a farm 2 miles East and 1 1/2 miles south of Alexander, Kansas to John and Katie (Kaiser) Yost at the home of his grandparents.

His parents moved to a nearby farm where his brother, Harry, and sister, Flora, were born. While living there he attended his first 2 years of school in a one room, rock building (Flavious District 18) Southeast of Alexander. His first year in school was spent learning to speak English.

His family moved 2 miles South and /2/ West of Alexander, where he attended grade and high school. During these years his brother, Woodrow, and his sister, Helen, were born.

He married Rose McCormick, April 30, 1936 at McCracken. They spent all their married years in the Alexander vicinity.

He was a life time resident of Rush County He was a farmer for 50 years and worked at the Kueffer Hatchery in Alexander. For nine years he and his wife, Rose, ran the cafe at the sale barn at Ness City, Kansas. He was also the custodian at the Alexander School for 10 years and 8 years at the Rush County Court House at LaCrosse, Kansas before retiring in 1980.

One of his pleasures was donning his Santa Claus suit for school, courthouse, family and friend's Christmas parties. Another source of pleasure after his retirement as "farming from his pickup" as he traveled the country roads in his community. He derived much enjoyment from his association with the school children, but his greatest pleasure came from his son, Brian, daughter-in-law, Annette, and his two granddaughters, Kim and Amy.

Leo was a member of Saint Mary's Church of McCracken, a Third Degree of the Knights of Columbus of LaCrosse, Fraternal Order of Eagles of Great Bend, and the Modern Woodmen.

He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, Rose, of the oe at Alexander, on son, Brian, his daughter-in-law, Annette, and his granddaughters, Kim and Amy, all of Plainville, two brothers, Harry and Woodrow Yost, Alexander, one sister, Helen Langelli, Sun City West, Arizona, and his other in law, Mayme McCormick, age 96, of the Long Term Care Center, LaCrosse. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his mother, father and one sister, Flora. He was a husband, father, grandfather, provider, and friend in time of need. He always had time to listen to our problems and lead us in the right direction. He liked the finer things in life.

He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace to love and serve the Lord.

Funeral services were held from the St. Mary's Church, McCracken, Kansas on Monday, June 24, 1985, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Eugene Kenny of Belpre, Kansas. Rosary was led by Msgr. Leahy of St. Mary's Church at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, Kansas on Sunday, June 23, 1985 at 7:30 p.m. Interment was made in the McCracken Cemetery.
