|Death: ||Jun. 19, 1892|
Update September 28, 2014. Thanks to Nancy Cornelius for locating the headstone for Amelia Austin, it is still in immaculate shape considering it is hand carved sandstone. It is located closer to the new church than I would have imagined. There is still one headstone next to it that needs to be identified. The dates shown on her headstone coincide with what is in the 1960 Cemetery book.
According to the 1960 Cemetery Book of Marshall County, Amelia died on June 19, 1892 and is buried at Rock Springs Cemetery. Her hand carved stone was found at that time and recorded, but since then can not be found. I have tried to locate a headstone in the cemetery, but most likely it has sunken into the ground and covered with grass.
Thanks to John Huggins for the information below.
As far as proof that Amelia's name was Austin I have two solid pieces of
evidence I ran across since last Friday. First is the fact that Emily
Lyon is living next door to her father William A Austin Sr. in the 1850
census of Greenville, SC. See below: This is after husband Sterling died
in Georgia and she moved back to Simpsonville, SC. I have had this data
for about 15 years but didn't know about the Austin connection till last
2085 Mary T. Austin 600 (aunt?)
2086 Cerry Brown 700
2087 William A. Austin Jr. 1000 (brother)
2088 William A. Austin Sr. 1200 (father)
2089 Emily Lyon ---
2090 John M. Howarde 200
Those are sequential house numbers in front of the names. You need to add
them to your write up on findagrave for Amelia. Also you need to clarify
who Sterling was. You mention him but earlier in my original copy I had
identified him as her husband.
The second piece of evidence is that the Austin Families Association of
America has Amelia "Milly" Lyons, daughter of William Anderson Austin 1778
- 1865 and Jane Nelson 1782-1856 and that her husband was Lyons. No first
name or dates but Lyons. This is on their website at:
They don't have dates for Amelia.
Stirling died in Social Circle, Walton, Georgia. Years ago I came across from within the Lyon family a document written by Wallace Johnson, a distant Lyon descendant and he had Sterling's death as
1863 and his wife's maiden name as Miller. The 1863 must have been a typo, the document had been hand typed, but he died in 1836 or 7 and was not in the war. We went to quite an effort to locate him but finally did in Social Circle, GA. We found the probate records in the Walton Co. GA courthouse. He seemed to have run a general store there after seeing his estate sale records. He moved there from Greenville SC after the 1830 census and died and his wife and family moved back to Greenville before the 1840 census. It just looked like he just disappeared. In the 1850 census the houses are listed in house order so you can tell who the neighbors are. This is when she moved back to Greenville, SC from Social Circle, GA
