Orangeburg - Mr. Eugene Asbury Brant, 80, of Orangeburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, at his residence following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 7, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. William Coates officiating. Burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers are Roger Kemmerlin, Mike Brant, Jerry Thompson, Kevin Brant, Mike Pooser, Billy Heckle, Ricky Heckle, Jimmy Utsey, Tommy Ackerman, and E.O. Hudson. Honorary pallbearers are past and present officers of the Orangeburg Dept. of Public Safety. Mr. Brant was born, March 2, 1927, in Orangeburg, a son of the late Bertie Brant and Lillie Mills Brant. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and returned to Orangeburg to join the Orangeburg Police Dept. in 1955. He rose through the ranks to become the first Director of the Department of Public Safety of Orangeburg, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. He served as a part-time security officer at Belk-Hudson for many years and became head of security for the department store after his retirement from the city. Mr. Brant was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was a Past member of the VFW Post No. 2779. He was predeceased by two brothers, Fred Brant and John Henry Brant. Survivors are wife, Sarah Kemmerlin Brant, of the home; son, Robert C. Heckle, Orangeburg; granddaughter, Jan Heckle Bryant (David), St. Matthews; five great-grandchildren whom he adored: Shelby, Katie, Fulton, Ethan and Lilly Bryant, of St. Matthews; five brothers: Ed (Devone) Brant, Luke (Mary) Brant and George Brant, all of Orangeburg, James (Dot) Brant of Rowesville, and Roger (Mary) Brant of Cordova; four sisters: Betty (Carroll) Carson, Mary Cunio, Gertrude Thompson, Gloria Chaplin, all of Orangeburg. Memorials may be made: Hospice of TRMC, PO Box 2352, Orangeburg, SC 29116; First Baptist Church, 1240 Russell St., Orangeburg, SC 29115 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210. Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home. At other times friends may call at the residence. The Times and Democrat, Orangeburg, SC, 6 Dec 2007
