Captain Bynum was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On October 26, 1969, he was the GIB of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission near Ban Karai Pass, Laos when his aircraft went down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
Though Captain Bynum's remains were never recovered, his headstone is at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Vian, Oklahoma beside that of his parents.
