Architect. One of America's most prominent and talented architects, he studied civil engineering at New York University and received his C. E. degree in 1858, then studied architecture with Richard M. Hunt and in 1860 formed a partnership with Charles D. Gambrill. He was also leader of a notable group that helped regenerate American architecture from 1875 to 1890. He used innovative building techniques throughout his career to create ever-taller buildings and large interior spaces for public use. Some of the buildings designed by him are the New York Cotton Exchange, New York Produce Exchange, New York Stock Exchange, College of the City of New York, Pulitzer Building, Wisconsin State Capitol, Manufacture and Liberal Arts Building at Chicago Exposition, and the residences of Cornelius Vanderbilt and Collis P. Huntington. (bio by: MC)
