Darrel "Pappy" Hayes, 66, of Homer, died Sunday, November 9, 2003, at Battle Creek Health Systems.
He was born April 12, 1937, in Pleasantville, Missouri. His parents were Ted and Nellie (Gray) Jeske.
Mr. Hayes married Helen Louise Singleton on September 25, 2003. She survives.
He was a police officer for the village of Homer for 18 years, deputy for Calhoun County Sheriff Department for 13 years and worked for Brooks Foundry for 33 years.
Mr. Hayes served his country during the Korean conflict in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Homer V.F.W. and Grace Freewill Baptist Church in Albion. He enjoyed drinking coffee and telling stories.
In addition to his wife, Hayes is survived by his mother, Nellie Jeske of Missouri; two stepdaughters, Wanda Brown of Albion and Eleanor Brown of Marengo; a son, Darrel R. Hayes, Jr., of Salt Lake City, Utah; eight stepsons, Harold Burkwalt of Albion, Art Burkwalt of Marshall, Chuck Burkwalt of Springport, Derrell Lawless of Valparaiso, Indiana, Donald Lawless of Litchfield, and David Burkwalt, Dannie Burkwalt and Jeff Lawless, all of Homer; 45 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hayes' father and a sister preceded him in death.
A funeral service was held Thursday, November 13, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Earl Martin officiating. Interment followed at Clarence Center Cemetery.
