Paul Raymond Billings

Paul Raymond Billings, 87, of Niota, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at Life Care Center of Athens.

A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Amos Walter and Iva Lee Webb Billings and was also preceded in death by his wife, Stella Irene Sharits Stiles Billings; and two brothers, Truett Wade Billings and Floyd Webb Billings.

He was a World War II veteran, serving as a B-24 waist gunner with the 389th Division as staff sergeant. He flew in more than 85 bombing missions, two of which were flown with actor Jimmy Stewart as the pilot. His interest in airplanes began at a young age and became an interest he held throughout his life. He was a member of the McMinn County Radio Control Association and provided plans for his "penny egg carton plane" to the Academy of Model Aeronautics, which is linked to several websites including the National Science Teachers Association.

His occupation for the majority of his life was a licensed electrician. He was in partnership with Joe Howard Electric Company in Cleveland for many years and later became co-owner.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Anna Jo and Ronnie McPhail of Etowah, Chris Tina and Donald Whittaker of Madisonville, and Paula Irene and Pat Rainey of Gallatin; three sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Jacqueline Billings of Belgrade, Mont., William Larry and Judy Stiles of Scottsboro, Ala., and David Ross and Vickie Stiles of Athens; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Joyce Geneva Billings Hicks of Athens.

The family wishes to express their most sincere gratitude for the care provided by Dr. William Bowers and the staff at Life Care Center of Athens.

There will be no formal funeral services or visitation, per his wishes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202; or Navy League/Warrior Foundation, 2115 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101.
