Silas was the third child of Richard Lemuel and Sarah Temple Perry Winston. He was the brother to Robert,Annie Clee Winston Adams Daniel , Rufus, George and Lillie Belle Winston Dale. He was in the Navy from June 05, 1918 until September 30, 1921. He then moved to Alexandria, Virginia where he met and married Margarette May Simms.(August 18, 1924). Their only child Francis de Winston was born on November 25, 1925.
