Legendary Stage Actress. She debuted in 1937 as Ophelia for Eva La Gallienne in "Hamlet". She triumphed playing works of Tennessee Williams, Chekhov, Ibsen or Albee. She obtained two Tony Awards, the first for "The Country Girl" and the second for her play in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?". Politically active, she was blacklisted in 1950 during McCarthy era. Acting Teacher, she wrote "Respect for Acting" and "A Challenge for the Actor". In films, she is remembered in "The Boys from Brazil" (1978) and in Barbet Schroeder's "Reversal of Fortune" (1990) as Glenn Close's maid. She was married with actor José Ferrer from 1938 to 1948.
