Reverend John Stewart Bell, age 77, of Atlanta, Texas, died Sunday, December 25, 2011 surrounded by family at his home.
Stewart was born July 2, 1934 in Santa Rosa, Texas. He grew up in Northeast, Texas and completed High School in Texarkana, Texas in 1951. Stewart received his B.A. from Stephen F. Austin University; his B. D. from Perkins School of Theology and had additional education from Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado and The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a third generation Methodist Minister following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, a member of the Lions and Rotary Clubs, chaired on United Fund Campaigns, etc. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. A. C., Jr, and Martha June Bell.
Stewart was appointed to serve in several districts in Texas that include: Hardin 1958, Wesley, Nederland 1959 – 1963, Parkwood, Pasadena 1963 – 1965, Omaha 1965 – 1968, Rockdale 1968 – 1973, Atlanta 1973 – 1978, Westminster, Houston 1978 – 1986, First UMC Bryan 1986 – 1991, Houston East District Superintendent 1991 – 1997, and the Tyler, Texas District Superintendent 1997-1998.
During his years of service in the Texas Conference Stewart served on the Division on Education, The Conference Board of Ministry and Chair of Scholarship Committee, Chair of Division on Evangelism and the Conference Blue Ribbon Committee on Evangelism, and as a member of the Council on Finance and Administration. Through the years he also worked in numerous other capacities as director of district camps, district auditor, etc.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlse Ann Kenneson Bell of Atlanta, Texas; daughter, Beth Simmons and husband Donny of Atlanta, Texas; son, Chris Bell and wife Amy of Lubbock, Texas; two sisters, Dr. Carolyn Bukhair and husband Ramon of Richardson, Texas, and Dolly Worley and husband Robert of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren, Ronny Simmons and wife Jessica of Arlington, Texas, Jenna Whittington and husband Matthew of Atlanta, Texas, Stewart Bell of Lubbock, Texas, and Mandy Bell of Lubbock, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Kate Simmons of Arlington, Texas and a number of other relatives.
