Born c.1739, Mrs. L'Hommedieu (nee Charity Floyd) was the first wife of Revolutionary War patriot Ezra L'Hommedieu. Of English and Welsh descent, she was one of nine children born to Nicoll and Tabitha Floyd, prosperous landowners in Mastic, Long Island. Her brother, General William Floyd, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. A bride of 17, she married L'Hommedieu, then 22, on Christmas Eve 1756 in Brookhaven. She died at age 46, not long after the end of the Revolutionary War, the defining event of their generation. Her widowed husband, who remained single for many years, married Mary Catherine Havens in 1803, but was interred near Charity after his death in 1811.
