Birth: Aug. 6, 1890
Jersey County
Illinois, USA
Death: Jun. 22, 1954
Alfalfa County
Oklahoma, USA

Daughter of Charles A Poor and Henrietta (Murphy). She was born in Jerseyville, IL.
On June 21, 1910 she and Andrew Jackson Brown wed in Galesburg, IL. They were living with his brother Lynn Brown. This was for a short time and later moved back to Jerseyville were they lived and had their children.
Alice was the mother of Ramona Latona; Helen Lucretia; Dorothy; Alice Lola; Buster Bruce; and Andrew Jackson.
Alice around 1928 left her husband and took the six children and moved to Cherokee OK after years of abuse. By this time her mother and sister Perniecie Sawyer lived there. Alice was unable to care for the children and placed them in the Western Oklahoma Orphanage for White Children in Helena, OK.
Aunt Alice Sanborn told me that her mother Alice would visit often, every week and there were times the kids would go home for the weekend. Aunt Alice Sanborn also said that it wasn't so bad after she got use to it. But my dad Buster hated it and ran away often. She worked in the kitchen and as they kept the boys and girls separated she only saw Buster and Andrew "Andy" at meal times. Aunt Alice also told me that older sister Ramona was married and did not go to the orphanage, but thought sister Helen was put into and indentured contract to a man with two children and she was to take care of the children and the home until she became 18 years old and she was free from the contract. How long she worked for the family is unknown.
While searching the census records Alice's parents seem to have split up after the death of her brother Hershel. Even before the death I find Charles living elsewhere as a board and farm hand and listed as widow. Henrietta struggled with the care of her daughters. I find Alice at age 10 as a servant in another household. Sister in another household as a ward. Obviously, Henrietta is having a hard time. Could not find brother at this time. I never found them living together again in the census. So in 1930 I see where Henrietta moved to Oklahoma and now living with her half brother and his wife Levi Murphy. I do not think Henrietta or daughters knew where their father Charles was or what he was doing. However, Charles had become sick with TB and had to go to a hospital in Kansas City Mo. He later died there and was buried behind the hospital. Alice Brown was found later in the 1940 census says she is divorced, has last name of Wakefield. Can not find if she divorced Andrew or remarried. On her headstone is Brown.
