Lottie Lou Lyle was the daughter of blacksmith and Confederate Veteran Jefferson Young Lyle (1836-1923) and Sarah Jane West Lyle (1842-1926). Jefferson Lyle started a carriage and blacksmith shop on Cherry Street, downtown Chattanooga in 1893 and brought his family from Mississippi. She and her younger sister Lucy Lyle lived with her parents in their old age, working in a cigar factory to help support them. She married William Anthony Claiborne (1887-1960) April 2, 1923. She was a staunch member of the WTCU and member of the Ridgedale United Methodist Church, which she and her sisters helped found. One son died in infancy; then son Jefferson Lyle Claiborne was born January 8, 1928.
