First marriage to Ann McGill Williams, after her death he wed Margaret Otelia Cullen of Richmond, Richmond City, VA. The family removed to Lynchburg, Lynchburg City, VA., in 1871.

"Mr. J. W. Breathed, a well-known citizen and magistrate of Lynchburg, died Friday night after a protracted illness. He was a native of Washington county, Md., and father of Major James Breathed, a gallant Confederate officer, who was killed during the late war."

Note: Maj. James Breathed was wounded several times during the war, but died in 1870.
