Birth: Aug. 4, 1933
New York, USA
Death: Jan. 10, 1957
Travis County
Texas, USA

Robert was the son of Moses Morris Koplewitz, actor/agent (whose professional name was Edward Eddington Smith) and his second wife, Lula Frances Short "Jeanne", dancer (whose professional name was Jeanne Francis). His parents traveled extensively during their careers so "Bobby" was raised by Jeanne's sister, Mary Short Burroughs and her husband Bill, who resided on a farm in Maryland. Two of his cousins also spent a great deal of time on the same farm, enjoying many good times together.

In 1949, Bob graduated from McKinley Technical High School in Washington, D.C. After attending the University of Texas-Austin, he joined the U.S. Air Force. In 1957, 1st Lt. Robert E. Smith was killed in a crash of a B29 refueling tanker as it approached for landing at Bergstrom Air Force Base during a training mission. Five other servicemen also perished.

A cenotaph memorial stone was placed at San Antonio National Cemetery. The link to the memorial:
