Rev. James A. Newhouse was born in Fauquier County, Virginia, the son of Isaac and Catherine (VanPelt) Newhouse. Pvt. Isaac Newhouse was a soldier that served in Bucks Co, Pennsylvania, during the Revolutionary War. Isaac and Catherine were recorded members of the Broad Run Baptist Church in Fauquier County, Virginia, as early as 1779. James married Elizabeth Wallace on August 2, 1802, in Washington County, Virginia. By 1814, James and Elizabeth had moved to Franklin County, Indiana. Rev. Newhouse was a founding member, minister, and elder of the Franklin Baptist Church in Alpine, Columbia Township, Fayette County, Indiana. About 1837, James and Betsy moved to Delaware County, Indiana. An old cemetery transcript assembled in the early 1970s indicates James's stone gives a death year of 1837.

That being said, James and Elizabeth sold a piece of property on February 27, 1839, indicating he died some time after that date. James either died in testate or no copy of his will has survived. On March 4, 1840, James's son William filed a petition to partition the real property holdings remaining in the estate. The defendants listed were Elizabeth Sr., John Newhouse, Polly Conner wife of Carventer Conner, Elijah Newhouse, Benjamin Newhouse, Sarah Garner wife of John Garner, James Newhouse, George Newhouse, Elizabeth Newhouse and Allen Newhouse. Horatio Black was appointed guardian ad litum for the minor (under twenty-one years) children, George, Elizabeth and Allen.

The burial locations of parents Isaac and Catherine remain undiscovered as of September 22, 2018, and remain unknown as of September 26, 2019. As a result, are not linked here. It is guessed that Isaac died in Columbia, Fayette County, Indiana prior to 1830 but that remains unproven. Catherine ma have died in Virginia or Indiana prior to 1820.
