For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
Lucy Jane Wilkey, was my great grandmother and the daughter of Sarah Daniels and Dennis Wilkey, married William Mathews on July 03, 1890 in Sullivan County, Indiana.
Their children were
Claude Mathews
Clifford Mathews
Male Mathews (died 12/09/1894 at birth)
Female Mathews (died 09/01/1898 at birth)
It is believed there may have been a daughter named Bessie. Not sure if the Female Mathews is Bessie or not. It is believed there could have been as many as five - perhaps six children born to this union.
According to Lucy's grandson Clifford Harlan Mathews, Lucy died in childbirth.
However, her death certificate indicates that for about two years, she had suffered from Consumption, a" progressive wasting away of the body especially from pulmonary tuberculosis." The immediate cause of her death was exhaustion. Unlikely that she died in child birth since the death certificate does not indicate such, or that she was pregnant at the time of her death.
The death certificate indicates her death happened October 30, 1900 at the age of 29 years, 10 mos, 5 days.
Although her death certificate claims she was born in Sullivan County, family records record her birth as Clay County, Indiana.
Her son Claude (my grandfather) frequently would talk about his mother, despite being only about 4 or 5 years old when she died. He also wrote poetry about her as well. He would often talk about the "what-if" should she have lived to influence his life. No doubt he did not have any clear memory of her but his thoughts were about what he thought she would have been like, rather than what he could remember about her.
