Pablo Mares who was born on March 3, 1913 to Domingo and Seferina Mares, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2004.
Pablo was preceded in his death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Lucille Mares in April of 2002.
Pablo was a caring father and wonderful role model for his family and for the many students lives he touched as a music teacher, musician and composer. Pablo composed the song, "Mi Lindo Nuevo Mexico" which was adopted as the official state bilingual song for the State of New Mexico by the 1995 Legislature. His career included 35 years in New Mexico Public Schools in El Rito, Santa Fé, Belen and Los Lunas. In 1968, upon his retirement, Pablo accepted an appointment to teach overseas for the United States Military in Bad Krueznach, Germany (3 years) and Kenitra, Morocco. Early in his career, Pablo's orchestra arrangements and his song " Mi Lindo Nuevo Mexico" were published by Karl Fischer, Inc. New York. At that time, Pablo was the only native-born New Mexican published by this important music publisher. During his career Pablo was honored by two Governors and two Secretaries of State, receiving the titles of Colonel Aide de Camp and Hidalgo de Calificada Nobleza. His many accomplishments and compositions are too numerous to list but his greatest accomplishments in life are the many people he touched during his 91 years. Pablo inspired many students from disadvantaged families to recognize their value and ultimately achieve important accomplishments in music, education and in their own lives. Pablo will continue to be remembered by many for a long time and his influence will, in fact, go on for generations, a tremendous legacy for one of such meager beginnings.
