9th Lord Clifford, Knight of Appleby, Westmorland. Sheriff of Westmorland. Son and heir to Sir Thomas de Clifford and Joan Dacre,grandson of Sir John de Clifford and Elizabeth Percy, Sir Thomas Dacre and Philippe de Neville.
Sir John married Margaret Bromflete, daughter and heiress of Sir Henry Bromflete of Yorkshire and Eleanor FitzHugh. They had two sons and one daughter, Sir Henry, Richard and Elizabeth, who married Sir Robert Aske.
Sir John was summoned to Parliament in 1460 as "Johanni Clifford domino de Clyfford chivaler." He was one of the Lancastrian leaders at the Battle of Wakefield where he was knighted 31 Dec 1460, and because he had slaughtered so many men he was called "the butcher."
Sir John was slain at Ferrybridge by a chance arrow on the eve of the Battle of Towton and buried in a pit with others slain during the battle.
