An obituary ran for Charles Ray Parker, oldest child of Mr and Mrs John J Parker. of near Ewing. Charles was recovering from an attack of scarlet fever, and seemed to have been entirely convalescent. On Tuesday evening, Nov. 28, however, he suddenly took very sick, and died within four hours.
Due to the contagious nature of the disease, and to the laws of the health department, the funeral and burial had to be private, and had to be performed within 24 hours after death. The body was interred in Ewing cemetery.
Darkness had set in when the cemetery was reached, so the burial service had to be performed by the light of lanterns. Charles had been born near North Washington, Butler County, Pa., on Oct. 9,1899. Besides his parents he was survived by two brothers and three sisters.
