Samuel Avery Collins was baptized on April 13, 1794. Source: Plymouth Church Records: Volume II; Baptisms in the First Church; published in PUBLICATIONS OF THE COLONIAL SOCIETY OF MASSACHUSETTS VOLUME XXIII COLLECTIONS Printed at the Charge of the George Vasmer Leverett Fund, Boston, 1923 at page 482.

It seems likely that he was born within a week prior to that date, given the baptismal practices at the time.

There is a discrepancy between the date of death on the official death record from the Town of Taunton (August 9, 1863) and the date of death on the grave stone (July 31, 1863).

His age at the time of his death inscribed on the grave stone was 69 years, 3 months and 9 days.

Taking the date of death inscribed on the grave stone and calculating a date of birth from his age at the time of his death stated on his grave stone, the date of his birth would have been April 21, 1794.

Taking the date of death in the Taunton Vital Records and calculating a date of birth from his age at the time of his death stated on his grave stone, the date of his birth would have been April 30, 1794.

Clearly, it is impossible to reconcile either of those two calculated dates of birth with the earlier date of his baptism as recorded in the the records of the First Church in Plymouth.

The actual day of his birth is totally speculative, as is the month of birth to a certain extent. The day of birth is omitted since identifying that date is not possible at the time this is written. The month of birth set forth in this memorial assumes that his baptism occurred promptly after his birth but should be considered approximate since it is possible that he could have been born in February or even earlier.

Samuel Avery Collins married Esther Churchill on October 7, 1816. According to some Massachusetts records, their marriage was solemnized by the Reverend Adoniram Judson in that year. That record conflicts with the apparently reliable reports that the Reverend was in Burma in 1816 as a missionary. This conflict needs to be resolved.
