Joseph "Joe" Rutland Myatt, Sr. was born February 3, 1925 in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina, the son of Edward Clifton Myatt, Sr. and Elizabeth Ellsworth Myatt. He grew up in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. Joe had two sisters, Mary Myatt Bryk and Elizabeth Myatt Jacoby, and one brother, Edward Clifton Myatt, Jr., and graduated from Savannah High School. He married Dolores Howe Myatt, and they had two children, Joseph Rutland Myatt, Jr. and Karen Myatt Sheehan. Joe was a Communicant of Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church in Savannah and a member of the Hibernian Society of Savannah (founded in 1812). He was a tugboat captain and elected to the Savannah City Council. He died on August 14, 1993 in Savannah and is buried in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.
