The son of Joseph & Hannah Childs, in 1860 he was a mason living in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" and had dark hair and dark eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Cheltenham August 6, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. C, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. Hospitalized for illness in Philadelphia, he was not present at company muster-out in Harrisburg, although his honorable discharge date is May 21, 1863, the same as the rest of the regiment.
He married Hannah M. unk. and fathered Emma A. (b. @1867), John R. (b. @1869), Bertha (b. @1870), and Carrie (b. @1875). Hannah died in 1882, and he married widow Christianna F. Moore July 5, 1892, in Camden, New Jersey. He died after a fall "on a stone pile" gave him "a dent in his head which caused a clot in his brain."
In his pension, he also claimed birth years of 1839 and 1840, but the family bible says 1841.
