Ed was born April 26, 1937, in Leominster, Mass., the son of Edward L. and Alberta (LaForce) Aikey. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force as an M.P. while stationed in England. Upon his return to Burlington, he was employed by the Burlington Paper Stock Co., Burlington Waste & Metal and Farrell Chemical. Ed enjoyed fishing, garage sales and reading. He is survived by his second wife, Donna Aikey of Burlington. Ed is also survived by his four children: his daughter Allison and her husband, William Ploof, of Grand Isle; his son Edward Aikey Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Shakopee, Minn.; his daughter Sandra and her husband, Wallace Clapper, of Williston; his son Anthony Aikey and his wife, Lisa, of Vestal, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren, Rebecca, Brad, Stacey, Amanda, Billy, Anthony, Lucas, Jared, Kristen, Brian, Lindsey, Kaylee, Alexandra, Michael and Troy; five great-grandchildren, Alicia, Alex, Aspen, Faith and Noah; three sisters and their husbands, Mary and Doug Heesh of Lansboro, Pa., Edna and Frank Lafond of Milton, and Louis and Ken Bailey of Fairfax; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Ed also leaves a very close friend, Al Truax. Ed was predeceased by his grandmother, Mary LaForce, his father, Edward L. Aikey, both in 1979, and his mother, Alberta, in 1997. A special thank you goes out to his Aunt Colleen, Uncle Pete, Aunt Blanche, Uncle Tommy and Uncle Pat for their loving support in his final days. Ed's family would also like to express a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Fletcher Allen Health Care for the wonderful care he received during his illness. At Ed's request, there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at the Salvation Army Chapel, 64 Main St., Burlington, on Sunday, March 16, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed's name to the Salvation Army or The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.
