U.S. Congressman. He attended Franklin Academy, graduated from Amherst College Massachusetts, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Glenwood, Pennsylvania. In 1851, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second, Thirty-third and Thirty-fourth Congresses and as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth, Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1863. After his final term he engaged in lumber pursuits and was president of the Houston & Great Northern Railroad Company of Texas, (1871-76). Returning to Pennsylvania, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William Lilly, reelected to the Fifty-fourth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1894-1903). Declining a re-nomination, he lived in retirement until his death at age 83.
