Catherine "Kate" Wells Wickham was born 14 Jul 1841 in Tippecanoe, Indiana to Thomas H. Wickham and Jane Moore, both of whom were born in Kent County, England and who emigrated from there to America in the mid 1820s.

At the age of 19 Kate married John Lewis Yager, on 6 Sep 1860 in White County, Indiana. They had two children:
Abram Jesse, b. 1861
Laura J., b. 1866

Their first child, Abram Jesse Yager was born 1861 in Howard County, Indiana.

A few years later, John became caught up in the gold rush in California. They moved to South Lake Tahoe El Dorado County, California and there John began mining for gold. Their daughter Laura was born in a mining camp in 1866. They apparently stayed here during the 1870 US Census because they cannot be found in the Indiana census for that year.

In the 1880 census they were back in Indiana living in Fowler, Benton County. Kate and John owned land in the area.

John passed away in 1881 and was buried in the Fowler cemetery. Kate (age 42) then married Thomas Johnston (age 80) on 3 Sep 1883 in Covington, Fountain, Indiana in the County Courthouse. Thomas owned orange groves in Florida and Kate traveled there and became part of the family in Florida. Thomas died in 1894 leaving Kate a widow.

Kate sold her land in Florida and Indiana and moved to Los Angeles to be near her two children. Upon the death of her son Abram and his wife Jennie Rebecca McBroom in 1911 & 1912, she assumed custody of their daughter (her granddaughter) Kathrine Elizabeth Yager and raised her until her marriage to Paul Arldon Ware in 1915. She was 14 years old when she married.

Kate then lived with her daughter Laura Yager Adam in Los Angeles until her death on 11 Jul 1931. Her funeral was two days later at the chapel of W. A. Brown. She was buried without a headstone in the Rosedale Cemetery, 1831 West Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA., Sec O, Lot 171, grave 2 NW.

The obituary notice in the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, California, July 12, 1931, states she died at 1133 W. Kensington Rd, Los Angeles, Calif. "Mrs. Katherine W. Johnston, beloved mother of Mrs. F. R. Adam. Funeral services Monday at 11 a.m. from the chapel of W. A. Brown, 1815 So. Flower St.,"

Katherine was buried in Sec O, Lot 171, Portion W 1/2, Grave 2NW. Interred 13 July 1931. No grave marker. "Mrs. Katharine Johnston" is listed in the cemetery record as the owner of the graves for Abram Yager, her son, and Jennie Rebecca Yager, her daughter-in-law. Also buried with john Yager is his daughter, Vivian Jessie Yager. Vivian was born out of wedlock and died a few weeks after birth. (The Rosedale Cemetery Association, Single Grave Lot Record, Los Angeles, California.)

California Death Index, 1931, Vol. H-O (located under J). The index gave the reference to the death certificate for Katherine as: No. 7944, Vol 303. Listed as Katherine W. Johnston, died 11 Jul 1931. Viewed by Rich on 13 Aug 2010 while at the Los Angeles County Courthouse at 12400 Imperial Hwy, Norwalk, CA.

Father is Thomas Wickham born in England. Mother is Jane Moore born in England. Katherine was born 14 Jul 1841 and died 11 Jul 1931 at 4:00am of cerebral apoplexy and senility. She was aged 89 yrs, 11 mo, 27 days. She had been living with her daughter Laura Yager Adam at 1133 W. Kensington Rd., L.A., L.A., Calif for 22 years and in California for 35 years which means she came to California in 1896. Her second husband was Thomas Johnston. The certificate was signed by Mrs. F[rancis] R[obert] Adam (Laura) on July 13, 1931. Katherine was buried in the Rosedale Cemetery on 13 July 1931.

Aka Miss Kate, Katie, Kate, Katherine and Catherine.

Since Kate Wickham Yager married Thomas Johnston when she was only 42 and Thomas was age 80 going on 81, it appears there was an agreement made that if she would marry and take care of him that he would financially provide for her. Jack Ware was correct in the story he told that Kate married a man by the name of Johnson/Johnston and because he owned orange groves, Kate became financially well off. Kate & Thomas moved to Florida from Indiana prior to March 1890.

Armstrong Chapel Cemetery-Old Section, North Side, found at http://www.wwtpl.lib.in.us/HistoryRecordView.aspx?historyRecordID=2002 states "Johnston, Thomas, 4/14/1894, [Aged] 90y 9m 4d." This calculates to a birth date of Sunday, 10 Jul 1803.

According to www.familysearch.com Thomas Johnston died in DeLand, Volusia, Florida and was buried in Greenhill, Indiana.
