Henry was a son of Francis "Franz" and Catherine (Daubenspeck) Hilliard.

He married Catharine Stoops about 1841, and they were the parents of nine children: Josiah, Stephen V., Elizabeth, John Nelson, Allen, Henry, Catharine, James Madison and William Dexter Hilliard.

About 1866 Henry moved to Manistee county, Michigan. Through the Homestead Act he purchased 160 acres in section 14, Onekama township, on present-day 11 Mile road. He and his son Josiah were inspectors of the first election of township officers in Apr. 1867. Henry died the following March, 1868.

Henry's parents - Francis and Catherine Hilliard - moved to Lee county, Iowa, before 1850. Francis probably died between 1855 and 1860 either in Iowa or Nebraska, and Catherine died after 1860, probably in Nebraska. Their burial places have not been discovered.
