John C P Hammond was one of five known sons of Captain Eli Hammond and Mary Polly Owen. Captain Eli Hammond was born in North Carolina, but at a young age reportedly moved to Davidson County, Tennessee. He became friends according to reports with Andrew Jackson and married a niece of Rachel Jackson at the Nashville home of Andrew Jackson in 1800. He served in the war of 1812 as a Captain with Andrew Jackson. He continued to live in Tennessee for a period but moved to Madison County, Alabama at unknown date. He and his wife had at least eight children. Five boys and three girls. Maybe there were more. John C. P. Hammond, had a younger brother, Benjamin Franklin. Hammond who moved to Robertson County, Texas in 1852/53 to become a large cotton planter. His younger brother Arthur Hammond moved to Washington County, Texas where he was a plantation owner. An older brother Ferdinand Lee Hammond continued to live in Madison County, Alabama for most of his life. He became a probate judge in that county. John is listed in the Shelby County, TN 1850 census with his second wife Avaline [Evaline] P. Sandridge Echols. The fourth child Ella Hammond was the daughter of Avalina P. Echols who he married in Madison County, Alabama in December 1849. Her maiden name was Sandridge [Sandidge] and the child was listed as being born in September 1849. Evaline had been previously married to Joseph Echols in 1940 in Madison County, AL. Joseph Echols, her first husband, reportedly died in Mississippi. Evaline, or Avaline, is 27 years of age in the 1850 census. None of the three children born to John's first wife Priscilla Shelby are in the household in 1850. They have not been located in any census yet for that year. His occupation is Physician. [Almost all of the sons of Eli Hammonds used the M.D designation and apparently were Physicians as well as Planters.] The only child listed is Ella, ten months old. John is listed in the 1860 Shelby County, TN census operating a large plantation near Memphis. He is living in the 10th district, in the Collierville Post Office area. This census was taken September 1860. He is a farmer, with a net worth of $39,000 and real estate value of $90,000. Hinds County, MS marriage records indicated that he married Priscilla Shelby in Hinds County, MS in 1836. Also there is a Hines County, MS court case record dated December 1842 where he and a group of four other men were sued by a Mr. Collin S. Tarpley for the amount of $2000. Case does not indicate particulars, but a jury came in with an award to the plaintiff for the amount of $2196 plus court costs. Hinds County is located near Jackson, MS and the first two or three children were born in this area. According to the oldest son, Eli Shelby Hammond's [later a Federal Judge in the Memphis area] biography, he was born in Brandon, MS in 1838 and the family moved to Shelby County, TN when he was four years old or 1844. Priscilla died in 1844. Priscilla Shelby Hammond is believed to be the mother of the first three children of John C P Hammond, Eli Shelby born 1838 {died Memphis, TN}, Ferdinand McLarin born 1840/42 {died Hammond Station, Texas}, and Priscilla Shelby born 1843/44 {died Mississippi}. Priscilla the mother is buried in the family cemetery in Madison County, Alabama. County records verify that he married two times. Avaline P [Echols] was his wife in the 1850 census with the ten month old child Ella. He is listed living with Avaline who is called Julia A [Parmelia A Hammond?] in the 1860 census with four children. Avaline is believed to have died in Chattanooga, TN where her daughter Ella Hammond Banks lived for many years and is buried with him in Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, TN with her husband. There is a Emma Hammond buried in the Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis that was buried 10/09/1876 at the age of 29 years. She is buried in a lot owned by the Leath Orphan Asylum. Unknown relationship] Ella was alive and well in the census of 1860. A child Milton Lee Hammond was born January 17, 1851, in Madison, Alabama and died November 7, 1856. Another child, Harry Purnell Hammond was born July 4, 1854 and died November 7, 1856. A child, Fanny Hammond was born August 14, 1856, Madison Alabama and died November 7, 1856. A notice in the Memphis Daily Appeal for November 12, 1856 indicates that "Died on Friday 7th, instant, of Scarlet Fever near Collierville, TN three children of Dr. J. C. P. Hammond, Lee, age five, Harry, age two and a half or three years, and little Fanny about three months old." Eli Shelby Hammond is buried in Memphis, and Ferdinard Mclarin in Lancaster, Texas, and Priscilla in Holly Springs, MS. Ella Hammond came to Robertson County Texas at some unknown date. This was the home of two of her uncles, B F and Arthur Hammonds. She married Hugh R. Banks Jr. in Robertson County in 1873 and they moved to Charleston Carolina within a couple of years. They were in business in that city until about 1884 when they moved to Chattanooga, TN where Hugh practiced law and was in the real estate business. There were three children born to them and two of children, girls survived into adulthood. Hugh R. Banks died in Chattanooga in 1894 and is buried in Forrest Hill Cemetery. Ella Hammond Banks died in 1919 and is buried in the same cemetery. John C P. Hammond died in Memphis, TN of cirrhoses of the liver at the age 64. He was living at 412 Popular Street , in the 2nd ward and was married according to documents available. The name of the attending physician was Alexander Erukes, MD. John and his wife Parmelia A [Julie A?] are buried in Elmwood cemetery in Memphis in a lot originally owned by their son, Eli Shelby Hammond who is also buried here. Parmelia Hammond died in Chattanooga, TN in 1892 and her body returned for burial to Memphis, later that year. Unknown why there was a delay of several months? Both Parmelia and Ella lived and died in Chattanooga. Also Ella named one of her daughters Caroline after her husband's mother, and the second daughter was named Evaline after her own mother. So Parmelia Hammond was Ella natural mother.
