Crimean War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Surgeon in the 23rd Royal Welch Regiment. At Sebastopol, Crimea, on September 9, 1855, Surgeon Sylvester went with a corpsman to the aid of an officer who was mortally wounded and remained with him, dressing his wounds, in a most dangerous exposed situation. Again, on September 18, this officer was at the front, under heavy fire, attending the wounded. For extreme bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in November, 1857 and later achieved the rank of Surgeon Major.
