Michel Foucault
Birth: Oct. 15, 1926, France
Death: Jun. 26, 1984, France

Philosopher. Widely considered the most influential social theorist of the last half of the twentieth century, Foucault was best known for his contention that social power relied primarily on networks of discourse rather than material relations or central authority. His new perspectives on old questions, including the nature of insanity, social discipline, conceptions of the body, the establishment of truth, and normative heterosexuality helped found the bedrock of what is now known as postmodern thought. His best known books include "The Order of Things: An Archaeology of the Human Sciences", "Birth of the Clinic", "Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison", "Madness and Civilization", and his three-volume "History of Sexuality". He succumbed to AIDS in 1984. (bio by: Stuthehistoryguy)
