Mrs. Ruby Vera Shiflett Land, age 87, of Old Dalton Road, Rome, died Monday, May 10, in a local health care facility.

Mrs. Land was born in Floyd County on September 26, 1911, the daughter of the late Frank Shiflett and Martha Mathis Shiflett. She had lived all of her life in Rome and Floyd County and was a housewife. Mrs. Land was an Honorary Life Member of the Floyd Springs Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Old Dalton Road Home Demonstration Club, the Old Dalton Road Garden Club, a member of the New Armuchee Baptist Church and a member of the Joy Club. She was married on November 27, 1935 to Mr. Bruce H. Land who preceded her in death on October 13, 1986. Mrs. Land was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters and by a son, Randy Land, Sr. on February 8, 1999.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sarah and Nick Lewis, and Wilma and Bryant Hopper, all of Summerville, one son, William Land of Wilmington, North Carolina; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Land will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the New Armuchee Baptist Church with Rev. Dave West officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. On Wednesday Mrs. Land will be carried to the church to lie in state from 10 a.m. until the service hour.

Mrs. Land will lie in state at the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. At other hours they may be contacted at the residence, 1777 Old Dalton Road.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and are asked to meet at the church on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and include Bruce Land, Jr., Thomas B. Hopper, Jeff Lewis, Danny Lewis, Dustin Lewis, and Andy Hughes.

The Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements for the funeral of Mrs. Ruby Vera Shiflett Land.
