Author. He is an American poet, who is best-known for "Mr. Whittier and Other Poems" in 1949, "The Dark Sister" in 1958, and "Collected Poems 1937-1962" in 1962. Besides poems, he was known for his diary and essays. After graduating from Brown University, he was a newspaper reporter and book critic. He eventually became the Literary Editor for the "Providence Journal" until 1951. In 1943 he married the young heiress, Eleanor Metcalf. In 1953, he and his wife moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, joining a literary colony. He was honored as a finalist for the 1963 National Book Award and was a recipient for 1939/1940 Shelley Memorial Award.
