Essie was the youngest of three children born to Joseph Jefferson and Zetella Amelia Watkins Switzer. Her older sister was Iona Pearl Switzer Baker and older brother was Albert Pierce Switzer. Essie's grandparents were John and Priscilla Slonaker Switzer. While in West Virginia the family name was Swisher. Upon the death of Priscilla, John and the majority of his children moved to Illinois and went by the name Switzer. Joseph and his brother, John Luther and sister, Mary Isabel (Switzer) Kepner eventually moved to Kansas.

Dec. 18, 1913 she married Joseph Edwin Shafer in the home of her parents in the Duck Creek Neighborhood, Reading, Lyon Co., Kansas, with J. B. Gillmore, Pastor of the M. E. Church officiating. They had four daughters and two sons.

Essie died in Osage Manor, Osage City, Osage, Kansas.
