Obituary, Florida Times-Union, June 15, 2005
Christopher Adam Kelley: Fernandina youth dies in work accident. A 17-year-old Fernandina Beach boy died Thursday while working in his family's electrical business. Christopher Adam Kelley was working in a 'boom bucket' on a crane truck at about noon when the accident happened, the Nassau County Sheriff's Office reported. Kelley was working for M.T. Kelley Electrical Contractors, which is owned by his father, Mike Kelley, near the Mariner's Walk Condominiums on Amelia Island Parkway. Witnesses said Kelley was attempting to use a cable attached to the truck's boom bucket to pull an electrical pole out of the ground. A hook in the cable broke, causing the boom bucket to lurch upward. Kelley was thrown over the bucket's side, the Sheriff's Office reported. "Kelley came down on the side of the bucket and tried to hang on with no avail. He fell to the ground, landing on his left shoulder and head, causing life-threatening injuries," the Nassau County Sheriff's Office report said. Emergency personnel estimated that Kelley fell 18 feet. "Kelley was not wearing any safety equipment at the time of the incident according to a witness" the report said.

Kelley was a senior at Fernandina Beach High School, where he played trumpet in the school's marching band. He was a Life Scout in the Boy Scouts in Fernandina Beach, and was an honorary member of the Fernandina Beach Optimist Club. He was active in community affairs, volunteering his free time to help others in the Fernandina Beach community, according to his obituary. He was studying to be a heavy-duty truck mechanic and was working on restoring and building a "monster truck." Kelley's funeral was Monday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Fernandina Beach.
