Allen Turner Davidson

U.S. Confederate States Congressman. At age twenty, he began working in his father's general store and he was commissioned a Colonel in the North Carolina State Militia in 1840. He began to study law, was appointed clerk of equity for the Haywood Count, in 1843, was admitted to the Carolina bar, in 1845 and opened a law practice in Murphy, North Carolina. In 1860, he was chosen president of the Miner's and Planter's Bank and with the advent of the Civil War, he was a member of the North Carolina Secession Convention in 1861 and served in the Provisional Congress of the Confederacy. In 1862, he was elected to the first House of Representatives of the Confederate Congress, serving until 1864. After his term, North Carolina Governor Zebulon B. Vance named Davidson to the Council of State and an agent of the Commissary Department of the State, serving until the end of the war. After the war, he resumed the practice of law as a criminal lawyer, became president of the Asheville North Carolina Bar Association and served until his retirement in 1885. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
