John R. Blackman Dies Here at 80
Retired Farmer and Property Owner Was a Widely-Known Mason.
John R. Blackman, 80 years old, a prominent Missouri Mason and a retired farmer, died at 4:20 o'clock this morning at his home, 1002 Jackson street.
He had been in failing health several months and his condition had been serious the last 10 days.
The funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon from the First Methodist Church, with Dr. Lloyd V. Harmon of Kansas City, Kansas, a former Chillicothean, officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. Perry P. Taylor, pastor of the church. Burial will be at Lucerne under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home.
Mr, Blackman was born Nov. 14, 1870 at Ravanna, MO., son of Leroy and Josephine (Osborne) Blackman. Sept. 11, 1900, he married Anna Jones in Putnam County and the couple farmed near Lucerne until they moved to Chillicothe 32 years ago. He had been retired since, though he looked after the farm and local business property interests.
He became a master Mason Sept. 25, 1925. In that date he joined Chillicothe Lodge No. 333, now Friendship Lodge No. 89 and at once became an active worker in the lodge. He was elected master in 1928 and again in 1935. He served as presiding officer of Lone Star chapter No. 30, Chillicothe Council No. 28 and Paschal Commander No. 32. He was district deputy lecturer of the 12th Masonic district for many years. He was a well-known Masonic ritualist and rendered long service to the Masonic fraternity throughout North Missouri.
Mrs. Blackman died Feb. 22, 1934. Two brothers also preceded him in death.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. A. E. Severance, 3201 Tauromee, Kansas City, Kansas; four brothers, A. M. Blackman, Panhandle, Tex.; C. E. Blackman, Silver City, N. Mex.; M. K. Blackman, Powersville; four sisters, Mrs. F. E. Perry, Kansas City; Mrs. Ed McGee, Pueblo, Colo.; Mrs. Harve Canfield, Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Fred Lowry, Colorado Spring, Colo., and one grandson, Richard R. Walker of the home.
