William Ira Ames was the sixth of eight children born to Abraham Warren Ames (1856-1926) and his wife Linda Welch Ames (1863-1916) of Lynn, Essex Co., MA. He grew up in Lynn where his father worked in a shoe factory. Around 1912 he married Elsie Lydia Adams (1896-1970). The couple had four children: Virginia, Frederick Marshall, William Ira Jr., and Richard E. Ames worked in the shipping department of a medicine company in Lynn. He died at age seventy-six.
