Lawrence played 4 years of varsity basketball at Swanville Consolidated Public School and was Team Captain his senior year.

He enlisted in the Army on 22 Jul 1942, received three battlestars in the European Theater, was promoted to T/4 Sergeant (E-4), and was discharged on 18 Dec 1945.

Married in Swanville on 7 Jun 1947

Lawrence enjoyed fishing, gardening, and weather-watching and served various terms as Vasa Constable, Church Council, and Church Property Officer. He loved to waltz and two step (Ben Barta was his favorite band) and was a member of the Northfield Dance Club.
