Joseph's wife was Mary Jane Ackerson, a native of Zanesville OH. He is said to have been an anti-Mormon sheriff during the fighting of 1844-45 and witnessed Joseph Smith's death at Carthage.

A note on Gittings Cemetery (northeast corner of Section 4, Durham Twp.). When I visited in 1993 it was surrounded by fields on all four sides and could only be approached by an abandoned section line. There were fourteen marked graves in the half-acre cemetery, dating from 1855 to 1900. All but Joseph Pounds's were in two clumps, one group in the northeast corner, another in the southwest. Joseph's stone stands by itself in the center of the field.
