James drove a bus from East Kern to AV High School, and had a school bus driver certificate for over 50 years. He was licensed as a school bus driver instructor and was the Supervisor of Transportation for Muroc School District, having worked for the district for 36 years. He also drove bus for Desert High and worked mechanic jobs in Boron. James was an innovative mechanic, doing jobs that were considered not possible- and made them work.
During his spare time he was president of the Boron Senior Citizens for a number of years, using his expertise to make necessary improvements. James had 56 years of perfect attendance with the Boron Lions Club, and during those years , served in many leadership positions. He served the position of governor in 1988 and 89. He was involved in many international Lions events.
James is survived by his wife of 49 years, Katherine (Kay); 3 sons, James R., Ronald G. and Joseph E.; 2 daughters, Marcia L. Dravis and Katherine (Kathy) Minnick; 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at 10:00 AM, at the Boron Community Building, John St. and Boron Ave., Boron. Friends may call at the community center at 9:00 AM Saturday until service time. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Boron Lions Club. Boron - Jim Welling passed away on Saturday October 30, 2011 in Lancaster, CA after a lengthy illness. Services for Mr. Welling will be held on Satruday November 5, 2011 at the Boron Community Building located on the corner of Boron Ave. and John Street. Viewing will be held from 9-10 a.m. and the services start at 10 a.m. Mr. Welling will be buried at 1 p.m. in the East Kern Cemetery in Mojave. Instead of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be made to the Boron Lions Club in his memory.
