Dorothy Petersen Chandler, age 88, passed away Thanksgiving evening, Nov. 27, 2003, at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home in Imperial, Neb.
Dorothy was born June 15, 1915, in Washington County, Neb. to Peter L. and Gertrude Petersen.
She graduated from Herman High School in 1933 and attended Dana College in Blair, Neb., for one year after which she was determined to become a nurse. She trained at Immanuel School of Nursing in Omaha and graduated in September of 1937.
To find work she journeyed to Imperial, Neb., in January of 1939.
She served the area as a registered nurse, anesthetist, and hospital superintendent.
In 1947 she took the responsibility of "night nurse" working from 7 to 11 or 11 to 7. In 1974 she retired from full-time nursing but continued to fill in when needed until the Chase County Community Hospital moved to its present location.
On April 4, 1941, Dorothy married Neil Charles Chandler whom she had met in Imperial and in 1946 a daughter Julie was born.
Dorothy was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and held the office of Worthy Matron in 1978. She was also a member of the Rainbow Grand Cross of Colors.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women and the Dorcas Circle.
She also served several years as secretary of the Imperial Grade School Board.
Upon retirement Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, visiting and traveling with her circle of close friends. The highlight of her travels was a trip to Jerusalem.
Dorothy moved to the Imperial Manor Nursing Home after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.
Dorothy was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, warm friend to many and a dedicated nurse whose skill, strength and concern were appreciated by the many patients and their families whom she was privileged to help.
Preceding her in death were her husband Neil and her two brothers.
She is survived by her daughter Julie and son-in-law Leonard Smith of Imperial, Neb. and her grandson Nathan Chandler-Smith and his wife Nancy, grandson Matthew Chandler-Smith and his wife Stara and son Ethan and granddaughter Sarah Chandler-Smith.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Imperial with Pastor Murray Schmechel officiating.
Organist was Mrs. Marcia Bauerle and soloist was Ms. Maika Bauerle.
Casketbearers were Robert Colson, Troy Musick, Nathan Chandler-Smith and Matthew Chandler-Smith.
Honorary casketbearers were Les Smith and Howard Kubie.
Eastern Star rites were by the Order of the Eastern Star, Imperial Chapter #279, Imperial, Neb.
Interment was at Mount Hope Cemetery following the services.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Prayer and devotion were hallmarks of Dorothy's life and her family would like to share one of her favorite verses from the Bible: This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24.
