John was married to Edith May Hill on 18 Jan 1893, Parsons, Labette, Kansas. They were the parents of four sons.

J. W. Barnes, 1724 Corning, retired Katy conductor, died shortly before 3 o'clock this afternoon. Death occurred at Mercy hospital where he was taken Aug. 29 for treatment following a stroke.
The body was removed to the Carson Funeral home.

BARNES RITES TOMORROW
Funeral services for John W. Barnes, 81, retired Kay conductor, who died at 2:45 p.m. yesterday at Mercy hospital after suffering a paralytic stroke Aug. 29, will be held at 9 a.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick's Catholic church. The Rev. Fr. Denis Dougherty will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet.
Born June 26, 1867 in Chicago, Barnes came to Parsons July 3, 1877 from Cincinnati with his parents. He was married to Miss Edith Hill here on Jan. 18, 1893. On July 5, 1886, he began work with the Katy. He was a charter member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Conductors here. Mrs. Barnes died Nov. 12, 1937, and two weeks later on Nov. 27, 1937, he retired from his work on the Katy after 51years of service.
Survivors include two sons, Harold H. Barnes, Albuquerque, N. M., and Vernon Barnes, 1810 Belmont, and one grandson, Jack Barnes, 1810 Belmont.
He was a member of St. Patrick's church and was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus.
The body will lie in state at the Carson Funeral home until the funeral hour. The Rosary will be recited at 9 o'clock tonight at the funeral home.
