Frank Richard Lutz (1890 - 1914)
Married June 30, 1912 in Oakland California
by W.W. Case

The proper pronunciation of the name Lutz is Lutes like the musical instrument. Often the name is spelled Lutes in Canada to avoid confusion.

She was married briefly to Martin Dorok circa 1917 but after her divorce she returned to using Lutz as her last name.

Frances "Edwina" Lutz lost her husband Frank less than a year after the birth of her first and only son Richard. She never remarried. She was born in Lincoln, California but shortly after her husband's death she and her son moved to San Francisco where she lived on Franklin Street until she could no longer live by herself. She spent most of her life as a widow. Her father George W. Luce was also a widower raising Edwina and her older sister Alice Naomi by himself, so she understood the challenges.

She supported herself and her son as a seamstress. She did beautiful embroidery. She used left over materials from her paying jobs to make gifts for Christmas and birthdays. The only mystery about her Christmas gifts was what color or colors the sweater would be. She was proud of being a seamstress because she was a very good seamstress. Her hands never stopped working. Even during visits and conversation her hands would be knitting or crocheting. She was a gentle and warmhearted person known as "Aunt Winnie" to her nieces and nephews.

After a brief stay in a nursing home she passed on in 1973. Her remains were cremated at East Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento then forwarded on to Lincoln Cemetery in Lincoln, California to be interred in the grave with her husband Frank.

Edwina had distinguished ancestors:

On March 22, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed her great uncle, Congressman Anson Burlingame as our second Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Qing Empire (China). The city of Burlingame, California was named after Anson Burlingame. Edwina Lutz is a direct line descendant of Joel Burlingame (1800-1883), the father of Anson Burlingame.(see certificate in photos)

She was also the great great great granddaughter of Revolutionary War hero Colonel Israel Angell who's diary is still available in book form. Colonel Angell was commended in a letter signed by General George Washington and received gold medals from Lafayette and General Washington.

Another one of her ancestors was Mary Ann Angell Young (1803-1882), the second wife of Brigham Young, and his only wife for about eight years. Among her children were the founders of the LDS Church. Mary's mother Phebe Ann Morton Angell (1786 1854) later became another wife of Brigham Young at the age of 59.

The great theologian and founder of Providence Plantations Roger Williams (1602-1683) was her 7th great-grandfather.

And Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was her 1st cousin 7 times removed.
