Zelda Bold
Zelda Don Bold, age 96, a longtime resident of Indianapolis, passed away October 7, 2011. Zelda, the eldest of four children, was born in Chicago, Illinois to Kalman and Esther (Abramovitz) Don. After graduating from high school, she worked at various office jobs, as a freelance artist, and dress designer in the Chicago garment district.
Zelda later moved to Washington D.C. where she worked at the Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Land Economics. While waiting for her security clearance, Zelda worked for the Labor's Non-Partisan League. After working at the Department of Agriculture, she transferred to the Justice Department, Department of Labor, Department of State and the Defense Department. Zelda met her husband, the late Elliot Bold, in 1944 while working in Washington, D.C. Then, married in 1946 when he returned from the war. As an Economist, she retired from HUD as the Director, Area Economic and Market Analysis Division for Indiana region.
She received her BA from Roosevelt College in 1954 and her BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1957. She designed clothing, hats and costumes in Chicago. As a freelance artist, she worked with a wide range of media and her work was featured in art shows and various galleries in the Chicago and Indianapolis areas. After retirement, she assisted her husband in his CPA firm until his death.
She was an active member of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck where she formed a hospital visitation group that continued for many years. She was also a lifetime member of Hadassah. She supported national and international Jewish charities as well as many local Indianapolis charities including Thrifty Threads, Gleaners Food Bank and Alzheimer's Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elliot Bold; parents, Kalman and Esther Don; brother, Irving Don; sister, Mitzi Don Lehman; and niece, Bonnie Lehman.
She is survived by her brother, Hyman Don of Broomfield, CO; nieces and nephews, Arlene Lehman Baldwin of Niwot, CO, Suzanne Don Karbel of Woodland Hills, CA, Andrea Don Blaha of Santa Monica, CA, Shelley (Beverly) Don of Denver, CO, Robert Don of Denver, CO, Gregory (Gisele) Don of Calabasas, CA, and Donald (Marie) Lehman of Malibu, CA; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Shannon Blaha, Briana Blaha, Tanya Don, Brennan Don, Scott Karbel, Ethan Don and Max Blaha.
She will be greatly missed and remembered for her intellect, strength of character, love of art and devotion to her family, friends and faith.
Zelda's family wishes to thank her special friends and caregivers for their love, friendship and support over these many years. With the assistance of her friends and caregivers, Zelda was able to enjoy these last years the way she wanted to live.
Interment was at Shalom Memorial Park and Cemetery in Arlington Heights, IL on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
A memorial service will be held at the Kaufman-Schuchman Chapel, Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, 600 West 70th Street, Indianapolis, IN on Monday, October 17 at 4:45 p.m.
