The Rev Luke W Hovey, pastor of the Newark Valley Methodist Church for nearly four years, died Thursday afternoon, Dec 27 at the Glenmary Nursing Home in Owego. He had been ill for several months.

The Rev Mr Hovey was born in Bainbridge May 26, 1894, the son of Willie and Ann Doolittle Hovey. He was graduated from the Bainbridge schools and from Cornell University in the Class of 1917. He also attended Drew Theological Seminary in Madison New Jersey, graduating in 1924. He entered Drew in 1918 but his theological course was interrupted by World War I during which he served overseas with the 77th Division.

On March 23, 1918, he married Miss Pearl Warn of Little York, whom he had met while both were attending Cornell.

The Rev Mr Hovey was a member of the Wyoming Conference since 1931. His charges included North Sanford, Sanford, Heart Lake, Danby, South Danby, Maine, Avoca, Yatesville, Pa; Candor, Whitney Point, Otego, and Newark Valley. He formed the Federated Church in Maine which is a merger of the Congregational and Methodist Churches and served as pastor 1926-31.

Survivors are his wife, a son, George Hovey of Bear Lake, Pa; three daughters, Mrs Paul Engelke of Englewood, N J; Mrs Clifton Richards of Owego; Mrs Wendell Richards of Syracuse; a brother, Paul Hovey of Bluff City, Tenn; four grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 pm Monday in the Methodist Church. Dr Adrian Foote of Binghamton, Superintendent of the Binghamton District, Wyoming Conference officiated. He was assisted by the Rev Philip Pitcher of Milford, the Rev Scott Clark of Sayre, and the Rev Harry Savacool of Owego.

Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Candor.

The Rev. Luke W. Hovey, pastor of the McKendree Methodist Church and the Germany Hill Methodist Church from May 1928 to May 1942, died last Thursday afternoon at the Glenmary Nursing Home, Town of Tioga. His death occurred after an illness of several months. He was serving as pastor of the Newark Valley Methodist Church. He was 62.

Funeral services for Mr. Hovey were held Monday at the Newark Valley Methodist Church. The Rev. Adrian Foote, superintendent of the Binghamton District of the Wyoming Conference, conducted the service. Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Candor.

A graduate of Cornell University and Drew Theological Seminary, Mr. Hovey entered the Methodist ministry in 1921. He was a veteran of World War I. His first pastorate was the North Sanford Methodist Church. Following this charge, he served Methodist Churches in Heart Lake, Pa., Danby, Maine, Avoca, Pa., Candor, Whitney Point, and Otego.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl Warn Hovey of Newark Valley; one son, three daughters, one brother and four grandchildren. The son, George Hovey, lives in Bear Lake, Pa. One daughter, Mrs. Paul Engleke, lives in Englewood, N.J.
