Sylvester was the youngest son of Horace Bingham Morse and Betsy Blackman. Like three of his brothers, Horace Monroe Morse, Samuel Zalotes Morse and Charles Wesley Morse, he served during the Civil War. Both Samuel and Sylvester did not survive the war while Horace Monroe and Charles Wesley Morse did. Both Horace and Charles died exactly a month apart from each other in 1907.
