Gordon D. Holmquist, of New Lenox, passed away at Silver Cross Hospital, Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at age 86 years.

Survived by his wife of 59 years Gloria Holmquist (nee Cary), a daughter Judy (John) Skiniotes of New Lenox. Three grandchildren Nicole, Melanie and Christopher Skiniotes. His brother Richard (Joyce) Holmquist. Two sisters-in-law Phyllis Holmquist of Joliet and Doris (Roger) Synder of Payson, Utah. Two brothers-in-law Frank Cary of Oak Park, CA. and Roger Cary of San Diego, CA. Also numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by parents Carl A. and Alma C. Holmquist. Three brothers Leonard, Donald and Howard Holmquist. A sister Phyllis Holmquist.

Gordie retired from the E. J. & E Railroad as an engineer in 1985 after 43 years.

Life member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Member of Mt. Joliet Lodge #42 A.F. & A.M.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during W. W. II serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre. Recipient of the Bronze Battle Star and Purple Heart.

Gordie was a life member of DAV Prairie State Chapter #14, life member of VFW Cantigny Post #367 and a life member of the Old Timers Baseball Association. Member of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railroad Employee #116. He also served on the Board of Directors of the E. J. & E. Credit Union.

Funeral services will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Road, Monday, October 31 at 10:00 A.M. Rev. Rodney A. Juell officiating.

Interment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery with full military honors.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M.
