One of eight children of William Markey, Jr. and his first wife, Hannah Brown Norris, he was known as "Dan" in the family. His mother died when he was 7. When he was 18, he got into an argument with his cousin, James Myers, while they and several other family members were washing sheep in the Big Stillwater Creek at Tippecanoe, and in his anger, threw a stone at him, hitting him in the head. James died three hours later and Dan was charged with his death. He was acquitted in court at Cadiz, the Harrison County seat, a few months later. Along with his father, stepmother and his half-siblings, he moved to Illinois in 1859, then on to Missouri. He was married to Mary Fisher Mock, and was a farmer. He died two years before both his father and stepmother. He was the father of 13 children, including: Alonzo (1865-1892), Ella Benton (Oct. 6 - Dec. 3, 1866), Leona Vail (Markee, 1868- ), Lena Leota (Dine, 1870 - 1945), Minnie May (1872-1899), Charles (1875-1875), William Bird (1876 - 1945), Mary Josephine (Lisetor, 1879-1934), Frank Earl (a twin, 1880-1881), Fred Ernest (a twin, 1880-1900), Daniel L., Jr. (1882-1930), Rose B.
