Sgt. Blong was a graduate of Port Washington High school and was enrolled at the University of Wisconsin when he entered service on January 19, 1943. He trained at Fort Sheridan and Keesler Field before going overseas in March 1944. Less than six weeks later he and the entire crew he was with was shot down over Germany. James was serving as chief engineer on the B-24 Liberator. James was originally buried in a cemetery in Belgium. In 1949 some of his remains were returned to his family and were buried in the family plot. In 2011 more of his remains and those of the crew were identified and buried in October 2011 in Arlington National Cemetery.
